Innovating for a carbon-free future of shipping in the Baltic and North Sea

About the Event
The launch event of “Towards Net-Zero Shipping” – our report on innovating for a carbon-free future of shipping in the Baltic and North Sea.
The shipping sector contributes about 3% of global green-house gas emissions. Although major international organizations like the IMO have set targets to reduce emissions, these targets are not in line with the IPCC’s 1.5-degree scenario.
On the flip side, rapidly evolving technologies (e.g., electric, hydrogen and ammonia propulsion), environmental policy reforms and a demand for the provision of environmentally responsible goods and services indicate, that the time to move towards more sustainable shipping has come. In the Baltic and North Sea, we are already seeing progress fuelled by ambitious plans such as the Green Hydrogen Economy in the Northern Netherlands, the Clean Maritime Plan in the UK and the Green Shipping Program in Norway.
Amplifier together with sus.lab at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) have produced a comprehensive report towards zero-carbon emissions in shipping by 2050 for the Baltic and North Sea regions.
The report analyses new technologies, identifies gaps in infrastructure development, assesses the economic viability and opportunities of alternative fuels and discusses the impact for the environment. Moreover, this report will provide an actionable guideline for ship owners, port operators, investors and policy makers to support this transition towards a more sustainable and green future of maritime transportation.
